History of Girls Incorporated

Girls Incorporated of Johnson City/ Washington County was created in December of 1944 through the efforts of the “Circle 2” women of the First Presbyterian Church.  It was founded so that girls from deprived backgrounds could be given the opportunity to have a place where they could find happy companionship and spiritual guidance.

In 1949, the club became a part of the United Way. It was located upstairs in the Acme Cleaners building on North Roan Street.  In January of 1968, through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Range, the club expanded and moved to a new home on South Broadway,

In 1989, the Johnson City Girls Club became affiliated with the National Girls Club of America and in 1990, changed its name to Girls Incorporated of Johnson City/ Washington County.  Thanks to a donation in August of 1993 from Stanley Harris, in memory of Ruth Harris, Girls Incorporated moved to its current location in the old St. Mary’s School Building on Library Lane.
